Back ground to the Emergent Church movement.

But what is the Emergent Church?    Unlike many denominations the Emergent church is not a denomination.  It has no central body, although it does have a number of leading ministers like Rob Bell and Brian McLaren who promote it.  As the word says this movement is “emerging” out of something with the possibility of going somewhere.   It could be describes as some great social experiment  that in my mind has become a nightmare.   Middle ages mystics and mystical experiences are back in vogue with these guys.  However the Bible is definitely out.  I would categorise the Emergent church movement as potentially rife with unbelievers who doubt and reject the THEOLOGICAL absolutes of scripture.  They seek to redefine the Bible in a way that is more palatable to the sinner. A social liberal gospel the does not offend but embraces everyone.  Most of all they seek to redifine God as a more socialble likable deity, whose anger issues have been dealt with by the wisdom of men.  As if we could every change God to suit our own agenda.

Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism

In today’s church experience has become everything, and what goes is happily embraced.  If it makes you feel goose bumps that’s alright.  But the truth is out.  They don’t know what it is and maybe in a few years they might get around to discussing what it is.  Simply they don’t know what truth is even if they ran into it.  The drive towards experience orientation is more like a car that is heading for the freeway but the driver is in the back seat and his dog is doing the driving,  Emergent movers have turn to dark age mystics who closeted themselves in caves and monasteries, fasted day and night until they hallucinated and had visions of dark places of light and shadows.  Many died being even rejected by various popes as either madmen, or saints.    The fact that these mystics were predominantly Roman Catholic Mystics means that Catholicism itself is being entertained as an avenue to grace.   The belief now is that the Bible is just another box that would cramp people style, so they seek to open the box, leave the confines of its structures and make new boxes with open sides and open tops.  Emergent mysticims is not just confined to the people already mentioned.  Emergent church  because it has no official boarders theologicaly to describe what is is, never mind what it is not.  It Is really an open social gospel that may eventually  become a stream that may fracture in many different ways all at once.  Everyone having their own opinion on what they are emerging out from.  Personaly they are really emerging OUT  and away from the TRUTH.

McLaren brought out a book  where he outlines this new Emergent theology, and called it “A New Kind of Christianity”.  (Note the emphasis is on a NEW CHRISTIANITY.  The old is dead so hail the new emperor, except this emperor  is a clown.)

The Emergent movent constantly seeks to redifine orthodox scriptures and place new meanings to words.

Even people normally supportive of Rob Bell are starting to notice; today we see a case in point from Ben Witherington in Rob Bell on the Hot Seat, where he says of Bell’s appearance on MSNBC:

What I find troubling about this video, and with the interview Tuesday night in New York that is also making the rounds on YouTube is that Rob  is evasive in both cases.    This is not the same approach he has taken in the past on a variety of complex issues,  and it is troubling indeed.    Whatever else one can say about generous orthodoxy, it should not include suggesting that polar opposite views about God are equally orthodox,  nor that contradictory views on key Scriptures  are equally plausible or possible.

Rob  like most people are aware that the Bible teaches about hell , but rebelion and disobedience means he refuses to accept the truth.  When people refuse to be guided by the truth they will certainly  reject the truth for whatever they so devised.

Hosea 4: 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Long before  people are destroyed for their lack of knowledge , it is because they have first rejected that truth  in the first place.

Emergent minister Carlton Pearson

Homosexuals and homosexuality is not going away. If every gay person in our church just left or those who have an orientation or preference or an inclination, or a fantasy, if everyone left, we wouldn’t have — we wouldn’t have a church”. –Carlton Pearson

“OKLAHOMA-based pastor and gospel music figure Carlton Pearson has drawn more criticism concerning his unorthodox beliefs. At a charismatic church leaders meeting in Tampa, Florida, Pearson spoke about unrepentant homosexuals getting into Heaven. According to an investigation published in the April issue of Charisma magazine, Pearson said he hoped gay leaders would “build silent bridges” by joining the staffs of “heterosexual churches” and gradually convincing them to accept the gay lifestyle. Another pastor told the group, “We do not believe that loving someone of the same sex in a committed, monogamous relationship is a sin.”

The article by Charisma’s editor J Lee Grady went on to comment, “Did you ever imagine we would see a day when so-called Spirit-filled ministers would call for the open acceptance of sexual perversion? If you can’t hear the alarm bell buzzing, please have your ears checked. We need to pull our heads out of the sand and recognise that the American Church is racing toward the biggest culture clash of our time.” http://www.crossrhythms.co.uk/articles/news/Pearson_Controversy/12535/p1/

Carlton Pearson may be filled alright but I doubt if it is the Holy Spirit.  In the video you are about to watch Pearson tries to defend Rob Bell.  So the great cry of Emergent is not just redifining what was once sociable unaceptable but to make it socially acceptable.  Calling good evil and evil good seems to be part of what they want to see emerging.

Anger or Justice:

2 Tim 3: 7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth

Now the idea of a God who has anger issues really stems from someone who has absolutely no Idea what the scriptures teach.  Like most Emergent ministers Hell is something we have down here, but not something mankind may face in the future.  They twist and squirm around the truth until they feel they have justified their unbelief. They push for a gospel with a very cosy warm feel attitude.  Sickly and blasphemous is what I would call it.  In  their theology a Moslem or a Hindu who goes out of his way to feed the poor is as much in the will of God as any Salvation army captain. So therefore all would be made welcomed.

Sending people to hell is not a knee jerk reaction from a holy God, but it is an issue of justice.  God anger is not like our anger which is often comes from a violent outburst.  God’s anger is never volatile but based on his deep sense of justice.  Hell is the final prison house for all who would reject God’s offer of salvation.  Hell is never about anger but it is about justice.  Unless you realise this as part of the nature and character of God then there is no possibility of coming to the truth.  Every word in scripture is based around the character and nature of God.  His holiness, his righteousness his love and his justice.

Rom 1: 28-29, 32 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,………… Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

God’s justice was just as much involved in sending Jesus as Gods love.  God knows us more than we do ourselves. God is not schizophrenic where his nature is fighting with itself.  Justice and love were combined to make an offer that was so outrageous and so wonderful that a person has to be a fool to reject it.   But God also knows that if his offer is rejected then there is no excuse on the day of judgement.  No finger will be pointed at God and say that his justice was cruel or his execution was wrong.  Justice was served to save the lost, but if the lost refuse to accept then Gods hands are clean.
