I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat

First Speech as Prime Minister May 13, 1940 to House of Commons.

To form an Administration of this scale and complexity is a serious undertaking in itself, but it must be remembered that we are in the preliminary stage of one of the greatest battles in history, that we are in action at many other points in Norway and in Holland, that we have to be prepared in the Mediterranean, that the air battle is continuous and that many preparations, such as have been indicated by my hon. Friend below the Gangway, have to be made here at home. In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony with which it has been necessary to act. I would say to the House, as I said to those who have joined this government: “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.

 We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim?

 I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let that be realised; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for, no survival for the urge and impulse of the ages, that mankind will move forward towards its goal. But I take up my task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men. At this time I feel entitled to claim the aid of all, and I say, “come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.”

Hebrews 12: 1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

 Eph 6: 1018 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all  prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

There can be NO DOUBT in the minds of believers that we are at a conerstone of history,  Before us are countless brothers and sister who are fighting for their freedom and even their lives.  We are called to be vigilent and to stand with them at this hour.  In mentioning Winston Churchills speech I would ask you to think of it a Christian sense.  The war is a spiritual one.  The forces before us are not always flesh and blood but demonic .  We must be victorious in this hour lest we loose the freedom that others have so valiantly fought.    We must be willing to take that stand wherever we are .  Let us be united  with one  effort and  that is the cause of Christ.  Let us take the baton that other have passed on and run with all the strength we have.  We have but one goal and that is to see souls won for Christ.    We might not have asked for this battle but we are  in it.  We must fight until the end.   Some may fall but others will  rise up to stand with us.  Prepare for hardships toil  and tears.  Prepare for rejection and hatred. Prepare for the fact that you will be misunderstood.

1 john 3: 13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you

Remember that we are not alone in this battle.  For there stands with us the very KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.  There is the sound of the trumpet, there is the call to arms.  Arise and go forth.  men of war and men of prayer.  The day is at hand.     Fear not  and take courage he will guide, and strengthen you…… AMEN

1 TIM 6: 12  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses
