PLEASE GIVE PEACE A CHANCE: NO CHANCE!

The recent peace initiative between Israel and the Palestinians has broken down again.

Here is the statement given by Inside Israel.  Now I will not take sides but even I can see why there is no agreement here.

 Here is the report

JERUSALEM, Israel – Minister of Strategic Affairs and Vice Premier Moshe Ya’alon said there is virtually no chance of reaching an agreement with the Palestinian Authority in the foreseeable future.

“There is no chance in the coming years for a peace agreement with the Palestinians,” the former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff told Army Radio.

“In the eyes of the Palestinians, the occupation started in ’48 and not in ’67,” Ya’alon said. “It is not only Hamas that thinks this way…Abu Mazen [PA President Mahmoud Abbas] does too,” he said.

“Their refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state shows they have no interest in having Israel as a neighboring state,” Ya’alon said.

Ya’alon’s remarks follow Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s offer to the Palestinian Authority on Monday to extend the temporary building freeze in Judea and Samaria – the West Bank – if they would recognize Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people.

“IF THE PALESTINIAN LEADERSHIP WILL UNEQUIVOCALLY SAY TO ITS PEOPLE THAT IT RECOGNIZES ISRAEL AS THE NATION-STATE OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE, I WILL BE READY TO CONVENE MY GOVERNMENT AND ASK FOR ANOTHER SUSPENSION OF CONSTRUCTION FOR A FIXED PERIOD,” Netanyahu said near the end of his speech marking the opening of the winter session of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

Palestinian Authority officials rejected the offer outright, saying they would never recognize Israel as a Jewish state.”

Now you and your neighbour are at odds because your neighbour is continually building on your garden.  What was a nice place to live in now has huts and fences and flower beds which you never planted, nor intended to.  You neighbour comes over one day and says.  Look OK I will stop building on your property say for a week if you recognise my right to live on your land.  Now would any right-minded person actually agree to such a demand?

To agree to another “suspension of construction for a fix period” is not an agreement. When everyone knows that come summer more land and more space will be taken up.  If the agreement went through, Israel would get the recognition they want and all the Palestinians get is a short suspension of building.  That is not a peace agreement under  equal terms.   Both sides must recognise each other sovereignty and boundaries.  That means there has to be an agreement on each others borders.

Sadly this rejection will  result in more conflict and suffering.  In the end  the innocent on both sides will be called to bear the cost.

Is there a way that I may please send private e-mails directly to you? I would love to get your opinion about something, but would rather not post my question here if you don’t mind. Thank you so much!
