While France strides ahead to ban the burka, certain British ministers appear to be staunched in allowing it.    It’s un-British they say.  Environmental Secretary Caroline Spelman says “women were empowered by the freedom to wear the face covering” .   While others rightly recognise that it is a symbol of oppression.

Despite a recent poll which saw 67 % of votes wanted the wearing of the full face veils to be outlawed.  One Tory MP Philip Hollobone who backed the ban has tabled a private members bill that would make it illegal for anyone to cover their face in public.  He remarked that this is Britain we are not a Muslim country.

What was interesting is that Spelman in an interview acknowledged that she went out Afghanistan and learned first hand what the burka means to women over there.  This is this re-education policy that is silently going on.  She says its part of their culture..  Those who choose to do so should be free to do so.

Now lest look at this for a moment.

Spelman talks about culture and freedom of choice. Others says unBritish to ban them.  Ok a few years ago Bikers used to pop into their local bank or post office.  Instead of trying to fiddle with their wallets and holding their crash helmets at the same time.  They would natural wear them whilst at the counter.  However the government saw this as a bad idea and banks now encourage people to remove their helmets before being served.    Now why should the same rule be applicable for the Burka.  If it is so un-British to remove them then bikers now have the added fact that to remove them would also be un- British and against their freedom of choice.  However try getting that past the bank teller when they refuse to serve you until you do.  But it is un-British, Its part of the Biker culture, Its our right to wear a crash helmet.    I doubt if any of those excuses would work.  But it is alright for a Moslem woman to walk into the same bank wearing the full Burka and not remove their veil.

Muslim bus drivers refuse guide dogs on board

This has not been the first time this particular issue has raised its ugly head.  Blind passengers are being ordered of buses or refused taxi rides because Moslem drivers see dogs as unclean.  One pensioner has commented “He has twice been asked to get off the bus because of his guide dog as well as at a hospital and a supermarket

The problem has become so wide-spread that the matter actually reached the House of Lords.  Transport minister Norman Baker warned that religious objections were not a reason to eject a passenger with a well-behaved guide dog.  However the National spokesman for the National federation of the Blind commented that the problem was common and “GETTING WORSE”

For some unknown reasons the tension again comes from Islamic teaching which considers dog saliva to be impure.  Now where does it say that a bus driver in his cab is required to stick his hand in a dog’s mouth?

But it is un-British these MPs say.  It’s their culture, its their religion.  We are a tolerant society and people should have the right to toss some poor blind person of a bus, and if that is in the middle of no where tough luck sunshine.  Again the spectre of Islam raises its head.  Where is the tolerance towards the Blind?  Where is the government legislation banning such conduct?  Where are the codes of conduct that would sack any driver for refusing or throwing a blind person of a commercial bus?  The fact that the report in question was placed in page 31 of the local newspapers shows how little importance that story made.

Maybe some of these MP need to get out into society and meet some of these blind people.  Their British too as they not?  Is this not a form of discrimination of the most vulnerable in our society.  Some MPs seem to be so concern about discrimination of a religious minority that they choose to ignore the even more Vulnerable   in our midst.

  1. The debate on the burka continues. Now as a man and a Christian it is a difficult thing to view just how the burka affects women in general. From my prospective it is nothing more than a dark bed sheet thrown over women’s body and face. However it is interesting to find not just a woman’s view on this hideous piece of clothing but also to hear from a Moslem. While I would certainly not agree on her Moslem beliefs I had to acknowledge that there are aspects which I think I would agree with.

Yasmin Alibbai-Brown in one of our local newspaper gave her response to what Caroline Spelman Environmental Secretary had to say from a previous news post.

It was titled: “Empowering women? You must be mad minister”

“As a Muslim you would expect me to agree with her, but I cant. She is wrong. Her fatuous and ill-conceived defence of the burka rendered me apoplectic with fury. Immigrant Muslims who came to Britain to get away from Stalinist, ayatollahs, mullahs and woman hating fanatic regimes in their home countries must be spitting their teeth out after hearing Spelman’s astounding endorsement of this dreadful garment. We Muslims came here wanting freedom that Britain’s proud history of democracy was renowned for. We wanted better education for our children and to live and pray in peace in a country which for all its faults gives us civil rights and equality between sexes.

Yet Spelman’s support for the burka suddenly puts all our expectations under threat; For the most obvious manifestation of the oppressive Islam we left behind is welcomed here with the blessings of the elite. I would like to invite Mrs Spelman to prove she believes what she says by wearing the back sheet and mask……She and the rest of the liberal minded burka brigade can only afford to be generous because the burka does not- and never will –effect their own lives……I tried wearing a burka for a day and threw it off in a couple of hours, wheezing asthmatically. I felt t wiped out a no body lifeless and voiceless. A Pakistani shopkeeper said I made him nervous because he could not see my face. I saw other shrinking from me and I could understand their reactions

Many veiled Muslim women would argue that, as far from being forced to wear burkas by ruthless husbands, they do it out of choice. And I have to take them at their word. But it is apparent that many women are forced behind the veil. A number of them have turned up at my door seeking refuge from the fathers, mother’s brothers and in laws. Men have brainwashed by religious leaders who use physical and metal abuse to compel the girls cover up. It started with the head scar, then went to the full cloak and now the total veil. A good number of thes women are warned of the wrath of Allah unless they succumb to life behind the veil. They are told by their fathers they are whores; They are told they will have no friends in the community and worse still land up as spinsters.

Muslim parents can and do argue that the rapid spread of these customs is the result of their attempts to protect their girls from the tarty sexualised clothes of western culture. Where mini-skirts and mascara are increasingly worn by pre-pubescent Children. The increasing sexualised of society should concern us all. But this is no argument for the veil…..No where in the Holy Book (Koran) are females asked to cover their faces………When caroline Speman made her ignorant remarks, she hadn’t though through how far the country can go with this. In Afghanistan women’s voices are disallowed in public places. Will that injunction come here too? But those who apposed the burka must constantly speak out. Modesty is fine. But state schools should not allow pre-pubescent girls to cover themselves. And in Hospitals, courts, universities, air ports and trains we should insist that faces must be revealed….”

I cannot relate the whole article as it was quite long. However you can see from what I transcribed that if a Moslem woman is worried about the ill conceived issue over this dreadful piece of Moslem attire. Should we not all be concerned as to where this country is heading. Naturally I have tried to see beyond this one issue to highlight a number of issues which have arisen. What is interesting and I do agree with is “the tarty sexualised clothes of western culture. Where mini-skirts and mascara are increasingly worn by pre-pubescent Children”. As a Christian and a father I am also aware of this trend. But unlike Moslem parent I try to educate my daughter on these matters and to dress her sensible. The growing immodesty even among so called Christians who choose to attire themselves in tee shirts which are often two sizes shorter than their bras has done nothing but serve the interests of the enemy.

If Islam advances we may only have ourselves to blame for we have allowed wickedness to flourish and said nothing. Immorality has blossomed unchecked. We have looked the other way rather than challenging it.

In so doing we have given the appearance that we are incapable of filling the moral vacuum.

Yet we should not be unmindful that Islam itself has little to boast about in its moral values.

In a recent report concerning Gaza in August 2009 by Paul L. Williams, Ph.D. of the thelastcrusade.org

•Hamas sponsored a mass wedding for four hundred and fifty couples. Most of the grooms were in their mid to late twenties; most of brides were under ten.
•Mahmud Zahar, a leader of Hamas, were on hand to congratulate the couples who took part in the carefully staged celebration.
•The pre-pubescent girls, dressed in white gowns and adorned with garish make-up, received bridal
•”We are presenting this wedding as a gift to our people who stood firm in the face of the siege and the war,”? local Hamas strongman Ibrahim Salaf said in a speech.
•The International Center for Research on Women now estimates that there are 51 million child brides now living on planet earth and almost all in Muslim countries.
•Twenty-nine percent of these child brides are regularly beaten and molested by their husbands in Egypt; twenty six percent receive similar abuse in Jordan.
•Every year, three million Muslim girls are subjected to genital mutilation, according to UNICEF. This practice has not been outlawed in many parts of America.”

It is from scenes like this that many Moslems have fled to acquire a better life for their children. I can only wonder what sorts of parents were prepared to hand their children over to middle age men. If Moslems actually flee from such atrocities then pray that as Christians we can show forth the light and expression of true morality. That true freedom can only be found in a personnel relationship with the living God.

  2. Muslim woman wearing veil ‘refused bus ride’ in London

It just seems that this subject will just not go away. Two Muslim women have claimed they were refused a bus ride because one had her face covered by a veil.

While we cannot anticipate the reasons for the driver actions, he may have felt threatened or it could have been motivated by racism

As Christians we are called to a higher authority. If we find that it is immoral for someone to refuse a blind person because they have a guide dog, we must also see it as immoral for a person wearing a veil to be refused.

The pro-quo is not what the Bible teaches.

In this particular case the lady in question was not wearing the burka but a nigab.

The niqab is a veil for the face that leaves the area around the eyes clear. However, it may be worn with a separate eye veil. It is worn with an accompanying headscarf

    The Bible teaches:
luk 6:35 but love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and [to] the evil.

Hebrews13:16 but to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices god is well pleased.

Gal 6:10 as we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all [men], especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Jam 4:17 therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth [it] not, to him it is sin.
