The departure of Chuck Smith into heresy.

Back in the era when hippies did their thing, Chuck Smith was one of the leading lights in drawing people to God.  His teaching tapes were very well-known.  I have most of his collection stored somewhere in the house.  Today it would seem that Chuck Smith now joins the vast numbers who have chosen to join with others on the heretical list of people not to be associated with.  His church has quite recently endorsed the Emergent Church movement which is nothing more than unbelief by a pseudo name.  In the video you are about to see Chuck Smith openly endorses Rick Warren.  A man who has been openly exposed as a liar and a heretic.

Chuck Smith and his son found themselves a few years ago according to TODAY magazine Battling in court over control of their own Satellite Network’s.  The litigation involved allegations of financial mismanagement of ministry assists.  Further allegations from senior Pastors have further revealed that Chuck Smith as well as others in Calvary Chapel are dangerously lax in maintaining sexual standards among its leaders.

The quote reads :

These men cannot call sin sin,” says one 20-year veteran pastor. Easy forgiveness, insiders say, has created an atmosphere of sexual license, where some unethical pastors sense that there are few consequences for sexual misconduct.  Additionally, former members and some pastors say Calvary Chapel fosters an authoritarian culture, where pastors believe they are accountable only to God. It has enticed some leaders to become power-hungry, avoid financial oversight, and, at times, become spiritually abusive, according to Calvary insiders.

Roger Oakland a well know advocate of truth has made this comment concerning this issue of Calvary Chapel displaying of Rick Warrens book

“Therefore, my 25 years of experience within the Calvary Chapel movement has provided the opportunity for me to be able to make observations about the Calvary Chapel movement. While this movement is made up of individuals who have various ideas (some are even supportive of Purpose Driven), the leader, Pastor Chuck Smith has made it clear on several occasions that he does not agree with the direction the Purpose Driven movement is headed.”

Yet as we see in this video Chuck invites his “friend” up to the platform.  So whatever Smiths previous concerns regarding Rick Warren, he has changed his position.

 Roger goes on to say

Further, pastors who attended the nation-wide Calvary Chapel Pastor’s Conferences held at Murrieta, California in either 2005 or 2006 would have heard Pastor Chuck explain in detail that Calvary Chapel pastors are not to be “Purpose Driven”. While there were some in attendance who were leaning towards Purpose Driven methods, Pastor Chuck emphasized Calvary Chapel was not going in that direction

Yet by the evening August 16th 2009 on this video we see a complete U-turn.  That is less than three-year. What has happened in that time?

It has been reported that “on May 5th 2009, Paul Smith, brother of Chuck Smith (the founder of the Calvary Chapel movement), was fired from his position in the Calvary Chapel (CCOF) organization during an unscheduled meeting that day. The motion to fire Paul Smith was made by board member Roger Wing and seconded by Chuck Smith’s son-in-law, Brian Broderson. Other board members affirmed the motion, and Paul Smith was dismissed.

For some time now Paul Smith, who has been in full-time ministry since 1951, has been putting forth tireless efforts to help keep contemplative and emerging spirituality out of the Calvary Chapel movement. At times, this caused conflict with other Calvary Chapel figures who did not resonate with these efforts.

A statement reads:

“Smith’s desire to codify and enforce not only the “Distinctives,” but positions on such matters as “The Shack” and secondary doctrinal issues was at odds with other people in leadership and that eventually cost him his job. Smith was working out of a deep desire to see his brothers legacy remain intact and define what was and wasn’t “Calvary Chapel.”

Another well-known chapel speaker Gayle Erwin has also come out in favour of the new age book the “SHACK” stating

““Riveting, with twists that defy your expectations while teaching powerful theological lessons without patronizing. I was crying by page 100. You cannot read it without your heart becoming involved.”

While previous positions by Smith and Calvary Chapel against such teaching existed in 2006 there appears to be a total turn around by 2009.

For those of you that don’t know the SHACK is a deplorable book that presents God as three women.  The Holy Spirit being the name of some Hindu River.  The appeal of the book is that God would take a man back to the shack where his young daughter was raped and killed.  As if God was into more physical abuse.  Its appeals has more to do with the books emotional appeal than any doctrinal accuracy

It has also been stated that while Calvary Chapel denounced the “SHACK”, Gayle Erwin continues to speak at Calvary Chapel

In the summer of 2008 it was also reported that Greg Laurie another well-known speaker and pastor connected to Chuck Smith and Calvary Chapel gave financial support to Rick Warren’s New York Crusade and called the Purpose Driven Movement a move of God.  While this was denied in a statement we can see from the following video dated August 16th 2009 that this was a lie.

It is also believes that what is happening at the Calvary chapel is not a mere accident.  The same thing is happening to almost every evangelical denomination and organization of any size in North America.  The rise of the new spirituality is partly because of the rise of emergent spirituality across Christian colleges and universities.  Biola University, for instance, where many Calvary Chapel pastors have attended and graduated, is deeply involved in this “new spirituality.”

It is also partly due to the influence of such men as Rick Warren and Bill Hybels and the Emergent Church movement.  All of which are heavily trenched in Holistic and mystical practices.

DR Rick Levy has revealed  that in 2008 17 million Americans were practicing meditation (eastern-style). That number is up from 10 million in 2003. At that rate, in another five years it will probably be somewhere between 20 and 25 million. There is no doubt that this surge of mysticism will have a profound effect on virtually every North American family. This statistic is sobering when you consider what Richard Kirby observed:

The meditation of advanced occultists is identical with the prayer of advanced mystics; it is no accident that both traditions use the same word for the highest reaches of their respective activities: contemplation.” (Mission of Mysticism, p. 7)

Mysticism (i.e., the occult) is overtaking all segments of society, and this means that the world is falling under the spell of sorceries (magical arts) that according to the book of Revelation will deceive all nations (Revelation 18:23).

We close with this: In Reimagining Christianity, by Alan Jones  he talks about a mystical spirituality in which not only all the world’s religions will be united but all humanity will be united whether religious or not. On the back cover of Jones’ book, Brian McLaren claims that this view “stimulates” and “encourages” him “deeply” and that Christianity is moving away from “dogma” (doctrine) toward “authentic spirituality” (mysticism).

With the termination of Paul Smith and the embracing of and teaming up with an emerging church there can be no doubt which road Calvary Chapel is heading down

All of this makes for frightening reading however the worse this appear to get the closer  the return of the Lord Jesus is,  Prophecy is being fulfilled before our very eyes.

  1. Follow up on this video( same crusade) we see the two men Chuck Smith and Rick Warren sitting side by side joking. This comment was posted along with the video

This video was taken On Stage at Harvest Crusade 2009. Rick Warren and Chuck Smith continued to sit with each other and laugh it up. This truly is heartbreaking for many who have held that Calvary Chapel took a strong stand against the Heresy of Rick Warren. Let this be a sign to you, Many shall fall away and depart from the truth. At this point Calvary Chapel’s across the nation and the world should be in deep prayer for Chuck Smith. Sadly the following day Chuck Smith Sr. had an opportunity to clarify and correct his position of taking the stage with Rick Warren and he did not. He instead said Rick Warren has ‘just been given another gospel, a social gospel.’ See pastors Perspective August 17, 2009 archives. For my blog post click: http://news4themasses.wordpress.com/2
I uploaded this so as to not send people to Rick Warren Affiliated Sites.

  2. Further update on this story :

The comment which came with this story reads:
“Thanks Greg Laurie for teaching 4 out of 6 services at Saddleback!” What a friend Greg has in Rick Warren. I think this video speaks for itself. This was taken by a young lad who has an affection for both camps: Purpose Driven Life Heresy (Rick Warren) and Calvary Chapel (Chuck Smith Sr.) This is back stage of Harvest Crusade 2009. I downloaded and uploaded so as to not redirect people back to Rick Warren affiliated sites. You can read the whole blog post at

    • 1 Tim 4: 1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

You seem to fail to realise the significance of what is taking place. Until 20 years and even probably 5 years ago the great majority of evangelical ministers stood foursquare behind the Bible. Today that is no longer even a debatable question. Many have now publicly and openly follow another Gospel, They preach another Jesus. The Prophecy of 1 Timothy 4 which was written almost 200 years ago is being fulfilled before our very eyes.

Now Jos Bri if you saw a bridge fall down and before you was a highway of traffic heading for that fallen bridge, Is it more loving to run out and cry STOP STOP STOP. Would it be more loving to try and stop people going down a road that meant inevitable destruction and death? Or would you say as you have suggested stand back, ignore the fallen bridge and hope the fall will not hurt them.

Can I suggest that it is more hateful to ignore the signs, ignore any responsibility to warn, and allow people to die in their sins?

Prov 16: 25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof [are] the ways of death.

If someone warned you of a dangerous situation would you call that person being hateful or loving towards you?

As for exposing them on the internet, may I suggest they have already done that already. Where do you think I go the videos from. All I am doing is commenting on them.

      • In agreement; you are >>”Christians”?!?

Two men were standing before God. On dressed oh so nice, correct, while another stood, sinful, unkept, without

One “righteous one” said, I THANK GOD (like you say) that I/we are not as that one.

While the other one said, God have mercy on me, a sinner.

God asks, which one is justified?

When you are used by the Spirit of God to do the work in even HALF the magitude that
        >>>>>>He<<<<<<<< alone has used Calvary Chappel, come back and remind us that you are the sinner asking mercy.

Go ahead. Cast your stones as you think you are doing a "god" service to mankind and the church.

God have mercy on you; you will fall down when you see him: not STAND before His side.

Only man can judge the heart. But you seem to be doing that and tag scripture to it..
        right………

  5. Gal 1: 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

    1 Tim 4: 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Eph 5: 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove [them].

1 John 4: 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

As long a Chuck Smith associates himself with the likes of Rick Warren then he is a false teacher who has slide into heresy. I do not judge him the word of God does

  7. Some people just quote the Bible to drive home “their” opinion. They forget to look at the entire Bible for correction and instruction.

To name names and expose others who are corrupt is Biblical. Read what Paul and others say about some of their contemporaries who departed from the faith or were blocking the propagation of the Gospel. They named them by name. It is very correct and Biblical to expose fakes and wolves in sheep’s clothing.

i still see SOUND DOCTRINE in some of the pastors!

    • In Galatians 6:1, Paul writes: Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
So if you are able to do that, then do so, or I would leave. Paul commends the Bereans in Acts 17:11 for searching the scriptures diligently to see if they are true. Be aware that they “twist” the meaning or definition of a word as well (just like the media does!) I recommend talking with your own pastor to see what he believes.

  9. 1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,

It grieves me that I am having to do an exposure on Chuck Smith, but we should not be surprised as we have been warned that in the latter days we would indeed see such things.

    The word for “DECIEVING” means

    1) wandering, roving

    2) misleading, leading into error

    a) a vagabond, “tramp”, imposter

    b) corrupter, deceiver

It is difficult to say how deep this rot goes. Some believe that once Chuck Smith goes there will be a major overhaul. But I am not close enough to say if this will be a for good or not. I trully hope that it will be for good. All I can say is to pray about the situation. I have to believe that there are still good sound Pastors out there even among the Calvary chapel pastors. Let me know how things work out. I am sure there are others who would love to see what happens.

  10. This is really too sad to hear. I listened to Laurie and others on the radio for many years long ago, and our SBC church did the 40 Days study by Warren. Is there some slim chance that they want to “lure” the muslims in to learn the truth? I think it would be a good thing for them to read the gospels that they claim were corrupted by christians in the Koran. Be aware however, that Jude told us that already as did Peter (2 Pe 3:16) and Paul, and John the elder and Jesus Himself. If you know the Truth, and you read the Koran you can see how it is twisted in their understanding and teaching. They have not had good teachers even as Jesus admonished Nicodemus. I can see how people will be deceived for even one woman I know left her husband and children because Warren’s book said that these were not your true family, but those who you will be in heaven with! Damage done. She is not going to think now that there is anything wrong with what he says. So how are they to come to Christ if she is not there to teach them? Just as well, she might wind up giving them coolaid.

  11. If you believe we are in the last days, then don’t be surprised at the number of churches following seducing spirits. It breaks my heart to say it, but it’s hard to find a church where the pastor address the problem of sin and repentance as a necessary part of Salvation. Because the old line denominations never vigorously opposed the modern wolves from the onset of their false teaching they slipped in with impunity. The powers of the air used radio and television to promote the Word of Faith Movement that make man God, The Shepparding Movement enslaves congreations, the Peter Wagner, Rick Joyner crowd who endorsed Todd Bently’s Voo Doo Lakeland Florida revival prefering possession experienced than the peaching of sound doctrine.
On the softer side of heresy there’s the Joel Osteen type of feel good, life coach type of preachers who make man king. There’s Emergent Church’s social agenda couples good works and eastern thought to deny almost all the sacred doctrines. How about Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven Church Movement where sanctuaries are called campuses, crosses and pulpits are removed, rock concert lights and loud music replace the choir. No sin is preached there, they don’t want to offend anyone. Why? The future merging of false Christianity with other religions has to be accepted.
How has it come to this? The only reason these liars can twist the truth with great success is because people are too lazy to seek the full counsel of God in His word. “My people perish for a lack of knowledge.” For the most part, prayer has become a to- do-list for God to bring man things he craves, or direct orders in Jesus’ name based upon spiritual laws that obligate God. The Country Club Christian Social Network is too busy to pray, or to study to show themselves approved. They want an interrupter to tickle their ears and flatter their sense of selfishness. The signs and wonders end of the spectrum are unwittingly telling the False Prophet of the anti-Christ The Price is Right so COME ON DOWN! With all the games show enthusiasm of PT Barnum’s suckers they sell their inheritance for a bowl of poison stew.
The Lord Jesus was recorded as saying something sobering in Mat. 7:13 “13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Beloved, heed Paul’s advice in 1 Tomothy 4:6 “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.” It would be a shame if the Rapture gathered so few it could be explained away. Pray the Lord send a revival that breaks hearts for what breaks His.

  12. The news is blasting through the Christian world that Calvary Chapel founder Chuck Smith has lung cancer.

“Please pray for Pastor Chuck Smith, Sr.!” reads Calvary Chapel’s current Facebook status update. “Today it was announced cancer has been found in his lung; there is uncertainty as to the extent. We are expecting to know more regarding prognosis and treatment after Tuesday. Please pass on this request of prayer for him, [Chuck's wife] Kay, and the rest of the family.”

According to his son -in law Chuck has a tumour at the bottom of his right lung.
He is to undergo surgery this week. Lets pray that God intervenes and works in that situation for his glory.

  13. Really sad to see facts twisted thin until they can be used to slander someone who has influenced generations to follow the Lord WITH BIBLE IN HAND like Chuck & Greg. You are doing the enemies work to cause conflict within the body of believers so satan can be freed to roam and devour elsewhere. If you were in regular attendance, and not hiding behind a monitor screen you’d hear both preach repentance and turning from one’s sin to follow Christ. God has riches stored in Heaven for Pastor Chuck for all he has done for The Lord’s Kingdom and bringing sinners to faith in Christ. I am a direct benefit of this ^ thank him, not praise him like the catholics do the pope for he is a man, fallible just like you and me.

  14. We should never allow others to discourage us, but to learn even from their mistakes. But also to uplift them in prayer that God will work in the situation. Satan loves to work in the darkness when there is silence , But he cannot stand the light of the truth. So continue to pray for Chuck and Greg. Especially at the present time with chucks health.
